Certainly, auxiliary lights are legal, as long as they have E-approval, and meet the requirements of the local legislation in your country. Some counries have stricter reuirements for example concerning the total reference number of auxiliary light and the vehicled own hi beam lights. We recoomend to always check your local legislation to make sure your auxiliary meet the requirements.

According to the law, auxiliary lights can be installed not only on the front of your car but also, for example, on the roof, as long as they do not blind the driver, for instance, by reflecting off the hood. Roof installations can use roof mounting kits, or the auxiliary light bar can be directly attached to roof racks. Lights used for roof installations are often wider. For example, the LuminaLights Scout Dual 1100 is a commonly used light for roof installations.

Foreign online stores often sell auxiliary lights that may lack the required approvals, which could lead to an unpleasant surprise during law enforment inspections. You can check the approval status of your auxiliary lights by examining the E-mark and reference number on the lens of the light. If this information is not available, your auxiliary light might not have the necessary approvals and may only be suitable for off-road use.

According to the law, auxiliary lights can be installed on motorcycles or other motor vehicles, subject to the same restrictions as for passenger cars. The law states that auxiliary lights can be installed, but these vehicles must also have an E-approved auxiliary light if you intend to drive on public roads. Further information can be obtained from the local legislation of your country. One way to enhance the lights of, for example, a motorcycle is to install more powerful bulbs to replace the factory lights.

There are several ways to install auxiliary lights, and the required equipment depends on the car to which the auxiliary lights are being installed. Typically, the installation of auxiliary lights requires a relay wiring kit and a license plate bracket. For most of the modern cars, it is easiest to install additional lights with the XBB Dongle & PowerUnit set. Knowledgeable installation and service centers also install auxiliary lights, and the installation can be done, for example, during yearly maintenance or other work.

These days, almost all new auxiliary lights are implemented with led technology. Led is superior in terms of efficiency, size, and durability compared to older technologies. Led auxiliary lights are suitable for both 12V and 24V systems. Led lights illuminate immediately at full brightness without any ignition delay. However, a disadvantage of leds in vehicle use is their low heat output compared to other light sources; halogen and xenon lights perform better at keeping ice and snow melted.

Led lights typically cannot have their leds or other parts replaced. On the other hand, there is usually no need to replace parts during the long lifespan of the lights.

Xenon auxiliary lights have their own fan base. Xenon's advantages often include an excellent light pattern; for example, NBB Alpha xenon additional light is still an excellent choice. Xenon also offers customizability, as users can choose or change the color of xenon bulbs. Additionally, users can often replace parts or bulbs themselves. The disadvantages of xenon lights include the need for bulb replacement and a ignition delay; xenon bulbs take a moment to reach full brightness.

Traditional halogen auxiliary lights are gradually being replaced by more advanced technologies. The main advantages of halogen lights are a pleasant warm light color and excellent color reproduction. Moreover, the high waste heat keeps halogen auxiliary lights effective in snowy conditions. However, in terms of brightness and efficiency, halogens lag behind more modern technologies.

In most of our auxiliary light kits, there are two mounting options to choose from - a complete kit with a license plate bracket, where the additional light is installed above the license plate, or a flush mounting kit, where the auxiliary light is placed below the license plate. The mounting method usually does not affect the performance of the light, provided that the aiming is done correctly. If the front of the car is very low, it might be better to choose a kit with a regular license plate bracket, but in other cases, either mounting option allows the auxiliary light to perform effectively.

Would you like to buy auxiliary lights, but comparing the lights feels difficult? Here are a few units that are worth reviewing, as using these might make it easier to understand the differences between auxiliary lights:

• Lumen (lm) is the unit of luminous flux. Lumens indicate how much light is emitted in total from an led or another light source, without specifying the direction of the light. Lumens do not tell the whole truth about auxiliary lights because the lumens produced by the light source need to be directed correctly, for example, using reflectors.
• Kelvins (K) indicate the color temperature of light. Light below 3000K is usually perceived as warm and yellow, while light above 7000K begins to appear blue. The common color temperature for auxiliary lights is 4500-6500K. The color temperature of traditional halogen bulbs is 2700-2800K.
• Watts (W) indicate the power of light (leds). Auxiliary lights typically specify the calculated maximum power of leds, but leds are often operated at "less than full power" to maximize heat regulation and lifespan. Like lumens, watts alone cannot directly determine the quality of auxiliary lights. More watts usually mean more light, but reflectors and other optics play a crucial role in ensuring that the additional light illuminates the desired areas.
• Candela (cd) indicates the intensity of light. One candela is approximately equivalent to the light intensity of one candle. Intensity can be used to calculate, for example, the theoretical range of light.
• Lux (lx) indicates illuminance. Illuminance describes the intensity of a light source on a illuminated surface. In practice, 0.25 lx is roughly equivalent to the light of the moon on a clear night. When comparing auxiliary lights, it's more useful to look at the range, for example, with a value of 3 lx.
